WINSFORD town councillors started their meeting on Monday evening by remembering Sarah Everard, whose body was found a week after she vanished in London.

Deputy mayor Cllrs Nathan Pardoe, who chaired the meeting, said: "I'd like to pay tribute to Sarah Everard and all women and girls who experience harassment and violence.

"My thoughts are with Sarah Everard’s family and friends, there are no words for such a tragic loss.

"The simple truth is that women are more likely to face harassment, domestic violence and sexual violence, with a recent YouGov poll finding that 97 per cent of women have experienced sexual harassment at some point in their lives.

"As a society, we must do more to keep women safe and call out those who pose a threat, both in Winsford and across the country. This must start with all men looking inward and addressing their own behaviour towards women. In memory of Sarah and other victims, I would like to propose a few moments silence."

Floral tributes have been laid across the country as vigils have been held.

Sarah Everard went missing while walking home from a friend’s flat on March 3.

She never arrived and was reported missing by her boyfriend the next day.

Her body was found a week later inside a builder's bag in an area of woodland in Ashford, Kent, and was identified through dental records.

A Met police officer is due to go on trial in the autumn accused of the kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard.

Wayne Couzens, of Deal, appeared at the Old Bailey today via a videolink from Belmarsh Prison.

The judge set a provisional trial for October 25.
