CHILDREN are being eased gently out of lockdown in a series of themed weeks aimed at making them feel safe and happy.

Pupils at Oak View Academy in Winsford are being encouraged to talk about their feelings as they adjust back into the classroom.

Executive headteacher Fiona Whittaker says the weeks and months learning at home were tough for a lot of pupils, and wants to help them readjust to the hustle and bustle of schooldays.

Lessons are being staged around weekly themes, which include 'hope', 'gratitude' and 'connectedness' in order to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Ms Whittaker said: "Having the children back makes us realise how much we've missed the laughter and the general atmosphere of school life.

"We've been preparing for their return with the knowledge that lockdown has been a difficult time for our families, and that we would need to have a strong focus on wellbeing to help them to readjust.

"The idea behind the themes is to help children feel safe and happy, and to help them explore their feelings and learn how to care for themselves and others.

"So far, we have had a fantastic return to school. The children are laughing and playing with their friends like they have never been away!"

Oak View, part of North West Academies Trust (NWAT) which runs schools across Cheshire and Shropshire, are working hard to make learning as varied and engaging as ever for pupils despite the new safety conditions.
