TEENAGE pupils are being encouraged to keep on studying even though exams may have been cancelled.

Winsford Academy students have been praised for their diligence and dedication working remotely at home during lockdown.

Teachers offering lots of online practical help and support say they are very impressed with the efforts children are making.

A virtual parents evening is being held online today for families of year 11 students.

Principal Gary Evans said: "There are still six months to go until these students leave school.

Northwich Guardian:

Gary Evans, principal of Winsford Academy is encouraging year 11 pupils to continue studying to improve their GCSE grades

"Whilst the opportunity of taking exams may have been taken away from them, they still have every opportunity to work and prove what grade they are able to get by attending all the live lessons that are being provided.

"We are tracking attendance at lessons, the more they contribute and complete work will help teachers to provide a grade that fairly reflects the effort they have put in."

Initial grades were awarded following mock exams in November but students still have plenty of time to improve their achievements.

"There is time to improve on grades," said Mr Evans. "Staff are working really hard to make sure students are being supported in a variety of ways.

"There is a mixture of live lessons being presented, a video quiz and online exam questions. Staff can watch what students are doing in class and individual lessons through Microsoft Teams.

"It is working very well."

Plans are underway about rearranging the February mock exams whilst the school is waiting for more information and clarification from national education officials about how students will be assessed.

"Whilst we don't know what the exam process will look like yet, there is talk of a mini assessment at home or in school," said Mr Evans. "I understand it is hard for students to attend lessons online but we are really pleased with the level of engagement.

"Students and their families are working hard and doing their best.
