Police will do nothing about it

I VISIT friends on Kingsmead, where there are cycle lanes and I have to ride on the footpath to avoid the many cars (20 last week), that are illegally parked on the cycle lanes. What do the police do in this case? Nothing.

Why must we lose Moss Farm?

All the fuss over how many lanes the new super-duper swimming pool should have makes me wonder why we have to get rid of the pool in Moss Farm. This is a popular amenity for local people, who do not care how many lanes there are, as long as they can get into the water and have a beneficial swim. It is disgraceful that this beautiful pool, and it was once, should be destroyed. Surely we can be allowed two pools? Surely some of the money that is being spent on improving Northwich town area could be siphoned off to improve Moss Farm?

Thank goodness for common sense

I WOULD like to thank the brave councillors of the CWAC SPC who chose to overrule the CWAC planners at the sitting on May 9. One councillor said “common sense has to prevail sometimes”. Logic and common sense are something that are sadly lacking in the planners and highways of CWAC. The planners have been obstructive and chosen on every occasion to believe Richborough Estates Plans and Estimates. I have written to the planners on numerous occasions to ask if they will indemnify residents against the inevitable flooding, should the development go ahead. They have acknowledged the letters but ignored the request for indemnification.

We need an eight-lane pool

I NOTE in the Guardian, May 8, that Clr Parker has changed his mind from his previous estimate that a six-lane pool for the new Northwich Leisure Centre will suffice for the next 15 years, down from 25 years. I doubt it will be that long, with the amount of new building being allowed by our enlightened council. It has been reported that councillors agreed with their consultants that a new pool be built to the same specification as Moss Farm. This is a false economy. There is quibbling over a suggested/doubtful extra cost of £3m to widen a pool, to eight lanes. This is before any amount of soil has been removed from the site. And how does repositioning of BT cabling come into the equation? There is no mention of pool depth having been considered. It must be deeper than the Moss Farm pool. An eight-lane pool it must be. This may cause upset, but the pool will be of more use to all users. If action is not taken now, the council will look more foolish and short-sighted. In 15 years time it is probable that the matter will have to be considered again.

Too noisy in an emergency

Some time ago I was on a weekend visit to Preston. While there I was struck by the diminished number of times emergency vehicles with disturbing sirens were heard compared to Northwich, where they seem to erupt willy nilly, day and night.

Why are there different rules?

I WALK to work at 5.30am as I work early shifts. Every morning I encounter Morrisons shift workers commuting on bicycles. The cyclists who have no lights or visible vests always ride two abreast on the pavement. While walking the dog today, I was missed by inches by a young lady riding her bike, in the daytime, on the pavement. I have a 16-year-old son who rides everywhere on a BMX, even Northwich to Winsford. He causes no trouble but has been stopped and fined £45 for riding on a pavement. I had to pay the fine as he does not work. He has been stopped on numerous occasions when he has been forced to ride on the pavement due to parking issues on narrow roads.

What about the extra traffic?

MY concern about the urban village is where is the extra traffic going to go? Guardian, April 24. If there are going to be 1,200 houses, you are looking at least 1,200 cars probably more as most households have two cars. As there is not going to be another bridge over the River Weaver, this means that Winnington Bridge is going to be the only way out of Winnington. This will be the only route out if you work in Warrington, Runcorn or Manchester, which is a no-go area with it being single traffic over the bridge.

Salary figures are astounding

I WAS disgusted at reading the cost incurred by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office, which was defended by the incumbent, John Dwyer, Guardian, April 17. I fully agree with the comments made in Jackie Boulton’s letter, Guardian April 24. However, I would like to add the following. The exorbitant wages bill is just the plainly visible cost and I suspect the total cost of the commissioner’s office will in fact be nearer the million mark. About a million pounds a year could be saved immediately by abolishing the post of crime commissioner and its entourage, which will only grow. It is absolutely astounding that he earns a basic salary of £75,000, and at the same time employs a part-time deputy earning £23,000 per year for three days a week, in addition to other chief executives on ridiculously high salaries, plus all his backroom staff to run efficiently, as he puts it.

Of course we need eight lanes

OF course this town needs and an eight lane swimming pool, one that will bring competitors in from other counties to have competitions here. I did all my swimming at the brine baths in Victoria Road and swam in gala’s there. Swimming is such a wonderful sport that it needs to be encouraged.
