WINNINGTON Park Hockey Club champion women's team came a cropper at the final hurdle.

The table-toppers went into their last game of the season against second-placed Welsh side Eirias with hopes of completing a 100 per cent winning run.

It started well as they went 2-0 ahead inside 20 minutes against an Eirias side lying 15 points below them, but the visitors spoiled the end-of-season party.

They grabbed a goal back in the first half and added three more in the second for a 4-2 success.

The loss does not detract from a superb season for the women though, winning 21 of their 22 games and scoring 90 goals in the process.

Park women's seconds ended their campaign by running riot at Warrington and winning 11-0, leaving the promoted side with only one loss all season and an impressive tally of 115 goals.

They led 4-0 at the break thanks to strikes from Izzy Warrener, Jade Jackman, captain Em Taylor and player-of-the-match Charlotte Holt.

Taylor and Holt completed hat-tricks in the second half, Warrener added a second and further goals were claimed by Lily Knight and Sarah Smith.

Park's men lost 3-2 in a frustrating afternoon at Chester, who got the advantage from two questionable short corners to go 2-0 in front.

Man-of-the-match Oli Wilkes scored from open play on the stroke of half time to get Park back into the game.

Park were rewarded for their early second-half pressure when captain Joe Corless levelled the scoring after some good build-up play and a fantastic ball by Nathan Gee.

A catalogue of missed chances followed from Park and this came back to bite as Chester punished them from another short corner.

The men's thirds completed a solid first season at a higher level, after last year's promotion, by bagging a 1-0 win at home against Deeside.

James Dixon scored the all important goal at the back post.

Although Deeside came back into the game, they found man-of-the-match keeper Jamie Bell to be in fine form.

The season's record shows Park winning three games (Deeside home and away as well as a 7-1 against Alderley Edge, and drawing five games (more than anyone in the division) finishing on a creditable 14 points.
