BOXERS from Superbox CIC in Winnington did themselves proud in the final stages of their national tournament.

Mason Warburton brought home a silver medal and Isabella Dempsey a bronze as both fought in the England Boxing National Junior Championships in Wigan on Saturday.

Fourteen-year-old Warburton – a student at Weaverham High School – was pitted against Tristan Dignam of Exmouth in the male under 70kgs semi-finals and put in a superb display.

His fast combinations and quick footwork eventually led to the referee stopping the contest, putting Warburton into the gold medal final.

He was up against European champion Bailey Wilding of Mikey’s Boxing Gym in Kidderminster and despite another good performance, he just lost out but claimed a silver medal.

Dempsey, also 14, was pitted against Mary Love of Priory Park Boxing Club in Dudley in the female junior cadet under 57kgs weight class.

The County High School student threw some powerful combinations and gained great experience fighting a tough opponent but was beaten by unanimous decision.
