WINSFORD can celebrate a history-making campaign following the final round of matches in the South and Mid Cheshire League.

For the first time, three men’s teams have been promoted to a higher level as champions.

“That’s going to take some beating,” said chairman Chris Mayoh.

“We’ve known it was a possibility for a while, but couldn’t make sure until the very last moment.

“It’s an achievement to be really proud of – we’ll use it as inspiration for next year now.”

Winsford A, already certain to finish first in Division Two, ended the campaign with a comfortable 6½-1½ victory over Cuddington A on Thursday.

Mark Abbiss, Alex Lerczak, Simon Nuttall and Alan Ward were on duty. The closest finish was in Division Four, where Winsford B took top spot on sets difference following a whitewash of Cuddington C.

Abbiss, Mayoh, Damian Cookson and Martin Stoilov starred in last Tuesday’s 8-0 success.

Winsford C secured the Division Five title in similarly emphatic fashion, beating Goostrey B by the same score.

Mike Bee, Steve Harris, Steve McCormack and Chris Mundie got the job done on Thursday.

Meanwhile Winsford’s newly-formed mixed team could make it a quartet of title wins.

A 7-1 victory at closest-rivals Tarporley on Sunday, when Lerczak and Nuttall were joined by Julia Kimpton and Jackie Penn, keeps them top of the Division Two table.

They visit Cuddington C this weekend.

The club has an ambition to enter a team in the ladies’ competition next season.

Meanwhile the senior players continue to practice at Knights Grange every Monday, from 6pm.

Sessions for juniors are on Wednesday.
