EIGHT men from Winsford are about to make the climb of their lives as they scale Britain’s three highest mountains - in just a day.

The ‘Winsfordteers’ are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Organising the event, Damian Ashbrook, of Willow Close, said: “We had the idea last October.

“One of the team has a child who spent her first twelve months at Alder Hey, and still needs their support.

“We wanted to give something back to the hospital, and that’s where the idea of the Three Peaks Challenge came from.”

The team, who range from their early 30’s to late 50’s, are all keen walkers but have never tackled anything to this scale before.

“We’re all outdoor pursuit enthusiasts and this challenge will test our fitness and stamina to the limits,” said Damian.

The climb is set for Friday, May 7, and so far planning has likened that of a military operation.

“We’re leaving Winsford at 9am, and should be going up Ben Nevis by 5pm.

“The clock starts ticking as soon as we’re on the mountain,” said Damian.

From Scotland the team will drive through the night back down to England for an early morning ascent of Scafell Pike, and after will travel a further 150 miles south fo climb Snowdon with an aim to finish before 5pm on Saturday.

“There will be no time to take in the scenery,” added Damian.

“We know we’ve got to climb all three mountains in uder 24 hours.

“This isn’t unrealistic for most relatively fit people, but it’s certainly not a gentle walk, and we’ll be doing it regardlessof the weather.

The Winsfordteers are aiming to raise at least £1000 for the children’s hospital. To make a donation and track the team during their challenge, visit the website below.
