Grange Theatre's exciting plans include first in-house production

Artistic director Thomas Frith has laid out his plan for reaching new audiences and taking the theatre to the next level.

As part of this, the Grange will stage its first in-house production in the form of Peter Pan.

“We want to build on what we’ve done here at the theatre for the past 15 years or so and that means reangling what we hope to achieve,” he said.

Thomas, 39, explained that there are four aspects to the Grange’s new approach.

First and foremost, they will look to continue building on the 'great reputation' of the school’s drama department.

Secondly, they are looking to bring in more touring productions and already have a packed schedule to look forward to.

Music lovers can enjoy tributes to Abba and The Four Seasons while for the thespians there is a masterclass with West End leading lady Lucie Jones, who starred in productions such as Wicked and Les Miserables.

“The reputation we have built is good but we want to offer even more for the local community, be that music or theatre.

“At the moment you have to go to Manchester, Liverpool or Chester to access those things and we want to be a venue that can provide those things closer to home.”

The third side to the Grange’s approach is community work, supporting local amateur companies and setting up groups for seniors and youngsters.

The final, and perhaps most important aspect is the introduction of in-house professional productions.

Having been made artistic director last summer, Thomas felt it was the 'right time' to make this step.

He added: “There has always been a desire for the theatre to produce its own work and this new role was the catalyst to say ‘yes, let’s do it!’

“This is something that the Grange Theatre has never done before.

“It’s a huge project for us and we are really excited about it.

“We have big visions for what we want to do and what we can provide for the local community.”

The first in-house production is Peter Pan, with 45 shows planned between December 6 and January 4.

Performed in the round and featuring aerial performances, the play will be put together by a team of North West-based creatives.

In a fresh twist to the classic tale, Neverland will take the form of a 70s nightclub, complete with a glittering disco ball.
