HAVING worked in hospitality, Simon and Kirsty Jane’s dream was always to own their own pub.

In April 2021, that dream became a reality when they took over at the pumps at The Spinner & Bergamot on Warrington Road.

The couple prides themselves on providing the best possible product with the best possible service in the nicest possible environment.

Here in our new feature – Meet The Landlord / Landlady – Simon tells us about the cosy, friendly pub where “everybody knows your name” and remembers your favourite drink.

Why did you decide to open your own business?

Having worked in hospitality, the dream was always to own our own business. We have loved this pub for years so when we saw it advertised we knew the time was right to make the leap.

Why this type of business?

Having worked in a variety of styles of hospitality, from large scale nightclubs to country pubs, this style of semi-rural gastro pub is where our hearts belong.

Were you open before/during/after the Covid-19 pandemic? How did this affect your business?

We took over the business just before the industry was allowed to re-open post Covid. To say it’s been a rocky road would be a huge understatement! With different variants of Covid appearing in our first six months and the government pushing people to not go out it was tough. We’ve also been faced with the rocketing prices of everything in life which has affected the whole country and many other industries as well since the situation in Ukraine. It has been hard to encourage people to come out and part with their hard-earned money. Our philosophy is to do what we do to the best of our ability, providing the best possible product with the best possible service in the nicest possible environment.

What makes your business different to others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?

We believe that our values of providing good products coupled with amazing service are what sets us apart from other local pubs. Our team remembers customers’ names, their favourite drinks and where they like to sit. We have fun with our customers – people don’t want to go out and have someone serve them with no personality or enthusiasm for their job. We don’t take the easy route by buying in pre-made food – we make our burgers and pies in house and you really can tell the difference.

Why do loyal customers return to your business?

We have worked really hard to make our pub every customers’ third place - after home and work, we are their next go to place! It’s always been important to me that we operate venues that my wife would feel happy to be in, if she was sitting alone waiting for me. We offer a cosy, friendly environment for everyone, whether it’s a large works meal out or a widower living alone who now has the pub as the place where they feel comfortable for a glass of wine and chat with the team.
