Regenda Homes provide update after Asda van crashes into flats

A large emergency service presence was called to Lewin Street in Middlewich after an Asda van got stuck in an underpass at Longcross Court.

The crash caused structural damage to the building, which is owned by Regenda Homes, with residents in seven of the flats spending the weekend at a hotel.

Now, with the exception of the directly affected flat, all have been able to return home.

A spokesperson for Regenda said: “We received confirmation from the local authority and our own structural surveyors that, with the exception of the home directly impacted, all properties have been declared safe for residents to move back into.

“Regenda staff assisted people so they can be back in their homes on Monday (February 5).

“We are working with the remaining resident, whose property was badly affected by the incident concerning an Asda delivery van on Thursday, to ensure their immediate and longer-term housing needs are met.”

The Asda van collided with the row of flats shortly after 4pm on Thursday (February 1).

One person was assessed at the scene for injuries by North West Ambulance Service staff but did not need to be taken to hospital.

Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.

“Fire crews attended a call to a dangerous structure after a vehicle collided with a row of flats,” said a spokesperson for CFRS.

“Firefighters isolated the gas and electric supply to all flats and put in place a full cordon around the building.

“Firefighters made sure all occupiers of the flats were accounted for.

“They retrieved personal belongings from the flats with the supervision of a structural engineer.”

Regenda Homes said it responded 'immediately' to ensure everyone affected had overnight accommodation and cash to cover meals, clothing and transport.

The housing association’s team remained on-site throughout the weekend to keep residents up-to-date on the situation as they worked with Asda to remove the van safely.

The supermarket has apologised for the distress caused by this incident.

“We are aware of an incident involving one of our vehicles in Middlewich and are in contact with the housing association affected by the accident to understand how we can best support their residents,” said an Asda spokesperson.

“We would like to apologise for any distress this may have caused."

Regenda Homes has confirmed that a meeting will be held at Middlewich Town Hall from 5pm tonight (February 6).

Asda has been invited to attend following requests from residents of the flat.
