A BAND which features on the soundtrack of an iconic 90s film is coming to Northwich.

The Salty Dog will welcome The Smoking Popes later this year.

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, the pop-punk band are perhaps best known for their song ‘Need You Around’, which was featured in the film Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd.

The band’s upcoming gig in Northwich is somewhat of a coup for the Salty Dog and it so it is perhaps no surprise that tickets have been flying off the shelves.

Owner Chris Mundie said: “We are mega excited about this one, it's the first time the band has been over in years and it's amazing we've been able to get them to play a gig here.

“We sold half the tickets in the first couple of hours too, so it's shaping up to be a busy one.”

Chris added: “I first heard them on the Asian Man 'Plea For Peace' compilation years ago and have been a fan ever since.

“They just write stunning pop songs, but in a post-punk power pop kind of way.

“Nobody else sounds like them either, which is a pretty rare achievement!”

The Smoking Popes, who play in Northwich on August 5, started up in 1991.

Composed of brothers Matt, Josh and Eli Caterer and drummer Mike Felumlee, the band’s early indie releases captivated crowds with their unique sound.

In 1994, the band were invited to open for Green Day and released their second LP, Born to Quit, featuring Need You Around.

The song’s popularity led to them being signed by Capitol Records, which later saw them tour with the likes of Morrisey and Jimmy Eat World.

The Smoking Popes split in 1998 before reuniting in 2005

Their latest single, Golden Moment, was released on January 26, coinciding with the announcement of their Northwich gig.

They will be joined on tour by Slackrr and Pardon Us.
