HEBDEN Green Community School, in Winsford, has been given the highest possible rating for the fifth year running following the most recent Ofsted inspection.

The special school, in Woodford Lane, has 95 pupils aged between two and 19 with physical disabilities and associated medical/sensory needs.

Its residential care department also received this top rating in a separate report.

In a report published on Wednesday, July 11, inspectors found that staff had an ‘innate understanding of each child and young person and their vulnerabilities meaning they were able to take effective steps to minimise any potential risks to the children and young people’s safety, health and well-being’.

Encouraging children and young people to be as independent as possible is a key strength of the provision.

One young person said that, when he was 10 years old, he told staff that he wanted to have his own home one day. The report outlines how staff ‘empowered him to gain the skills needed to achieve this’ and goes on to say that the young man has recently signed his tenancy agreement.

Parents who spoke with inspectors referred to the school and residential provision as being ‘part of a family’.

Leadership and management were quoted in the report as being ‘inspirational and aspirational’ who are ‘continually striving to make improvements for the benefit of the children and young people’.

The school has held an outstanding rating since November 2013 and celebrated their achievement on Friday, July 13, with a garden party.

At the party, head teacher Alison Ashley said: “It is a privilege every day to be a head teacher of a school like this where we all work together. We all respect, value and love each other and, as a consequence, we have a great school.”

She was also presented with a bunch of flowers by a pupil who has been attending the school since he was two years old.

Sam Taylor, 19, thanked the staff on behalf of all the pupils who attend the school and commended their achievement of a brilliant report.
