THE community of Winsford has shown a world of support to a young mother starting up a weekly group for families who have children with autism.

Gabriella Della-Rocca started the group – One Step at a Time – to provide support for parents in Winsford as a place to share tips they have come across to help with situations in day-to-day life that can be stressful for autistic children.

Gabriella said: “I am a mum on a mission to create an autism-friendly community. My aim is to create a safe place where families can come and not feel judged.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the whole community for their help on the day.”

The 27-year-old, who has a daughter with autism, held an event at Wharton Library on Thursday, July 12, to raise awareness of the group in the community.

The mayor of Winsford, Cllr Gina Lewis, attended the day, local cafes helped by donating refreshments and businesses showed support by providing future services and bidding to help become more autism-friendly.

Gabriella added: “It is hard work, but I want to change the future for my daughter and for other families. If I can make just one change I will be happy.”

Possible plans for the future include events with Cheshire Police, an animal experience with Zoo2U and a group visit to Jodrell Bank Observatory.

She is looking for volunteers to allow the group to expand into neighbouring towns, such as Northwich, Middlewich and Crewe.

Weekly groups will take place free of charge every Thursday in Winsford Lifestyle Centre at 12:15pm.
