A MEMORIAL service is being held at St Chad’s Church at Over to honour the servicemen from Winsford who lost their lives in the First World War.

The service is taking place at 11am on Saturday, July 14, to mark the centenary of the dedication of the First World War memorial which was erected during the war and inscribed with the names of soldiers as and when the Vicar received news of their loss.

The memorial itself has recently been awarded Grade 11 status and added to the Buildings of Special Architectural or Special Interest list.

Reverend Chris Moore, Vicar at St Chad’s Church, said: “This service is for the whole community as there can barely be a family in Winsford who has not been deeply affected by the loss of so many of the town’s young men.

“This is reflected in the keen interest shown by so many people in the community, including children from our schools who have helped in cleaning up the stonework on the memorial and in writing letters of gratitude to those who sacrificed so much for us.”

Cllr Gina Lewis, Winsford Town Mayor, will be speaking at the service where The Royal British Legion, The Royal British Legion Women’s Section, The Army Cadets, The Sea Cadets and other uniformed organisations will be represented.

There will be a display of First World War exhibits in the church after the service when refreshments will also be available.
