WORK has begun on a memorial garden for victims of the Manchester Arena attack at a Winsford estate.

The Mere View Residents Remembrance Garden was built as a lasting tribute to Eilidh Macleod, from Barra in Scotland, who had Winsford-based family members.

The 14-year-old was among the youngest victims of the bombing last May, which claimed 22 lives of those leaving an Ariana Grande concert.

Keren Dack, who lives on the estate in Rosemary Crescent and Brimstone Road, took charge of the project.

She said: “The residents association spent over a year trying to find out who was responsible for this small area of land.

“Our estates street is named after butterflies - Rosemary and Brimstone - so I thought maybe I could get the kids during the school holidays to create butterfly boxes. With the anniversary of the attack approaching so we decided to make the garden a bee-themed memorial garden.”

The children who live in the area were asked to help make these mounted boxes as part of a competition and the best will receive a prize as well as a free lawn treatment for the parents from Keren’s company - Emerald Lawncare.

The Wade family, who include Leyla, Harley, Elise And Lottie, created a yellow and black heart shaped bee house and were winners of the competition.

Other houses already in place were made by Rosie and Holly Beaty as well as Josh and Connor Wood-Bromley.

Wyvale Garden Centre in Tarporley have donated a range of plants and shrubs that will encourage bees to nest in the garden.

Total Tools in Nantwich helped with providing tools and manpower to dig up the turf in what Keren describes as an ‘amazing show of the community coming together’.

More plants will be added to the garden in the coming weeks.
