A WINSFORD couple, who met as teenagers, will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this month.

Ray and Marjorie Barron, who live in Sycamore Avenue, were married in St. Mary’s Church, in Sandbach, in May 1958.

Ray, 82, worked as an electrician and briefly at ICI - as well as serving in the Air Force - and Marjorie, 80, worked as a dinner lady for Darnhall Community Primary School for 19 years before starting a family in the 1960’s.

They met in the 1950’s at a dance club in Winsford and were together for five years before they decided to get married.

Marjorie said: “The weather was so unpredictable on the day of the wedding, we had rain, sleet and even a bit of snow in the morning. By the afternoon, when we go to the church, it was a lovely, warm sunny day.”

On their wedding day, Marjorie’s auntie had organised for the church bells to ring and the choir she was a former performer with to sing as a present.

Ray added; “It was a lovely surprise for us both on the day, we look back with many happy memories. We’d both do it all over again in a heartbeat.”

They have been keen caravanners, travelling across England, Ireland and some of France as part of a caravan club for more than 40 years.

The couple have four children - Jackie, Michael, Andrew and Tracey - who all live close by and regularly visit their parents.

They also have six grandchildren – Tom, Oliver, Francesca, Kara, Lucy and Harrison - and were recently made great-grandparents with the arrival of Oliver’s daughter Asara, who was born in August last year.

The proud Nanna and Grandad regularly spoil them all and love watching the Barron family continue to grow.

Marjorie said: “I always wanted a big family and I’m so happy that we are a very close family, we will always make time for one another.

“We are always doing something together and it makes celebrations like Christmas and birthdays a massive party.”

They will be marking the milestone diamond anniversary with a sunny holiday in Majorca.

Revealing what they believe is the secret to a long marriage, they said: “Happiness is the key. As long as you are happy then you can overcome any problem. We haven’t stopped smiling for the last 60 years and look forward to making more memories in the future.”
