THE youngsters at Wharton Scouts spent an interactive day learning about Winsford’s heritage by building a full-size Weaver steam packet.

In a project run alongside Crosshatch Gallery and Makerspace, in Queens Parade, the group was given the chance to build their own boat to scale using cardboard.

Derek Johnson, from Crosshatch, told the Guardian: “It was an activity to raise awareness of Winsford heritage, in particular the boat building.

“It gave the youngsters some sense of scale regarding the craft, and the life of the watermen.

“The Scout group really enjoyed this – education with enjoyment.”

The event was run in preparation for the national Heritage Open Days, which take place next month, and the Winsford Salt Fair.

The annual five-day festival will run from Wednesday, September 13, to Sunday, September 17.
