SCHOOLCHILDREN in Winsford are set to benefit from a new and innovative programme of competitive sport.

Teachers from Oak View Academy are part of a project aimed at using sport to inspire their youngest pupils.

While some primary schools wait until children are older before introducing a competitive element in sport, Oak View believes it can raise confidence, improve fitness and teach that winning and losing should be treated with equal importance.

The programme is designed to appeal to all pupils and includes football, netball, orienteering, tag rugby and athletics. Older children will help out in roles such as referee, scorer and coach.

The school, which will be joined by Delamere Academy in Northwich and St Martin’s Academy in Chester in the project, are part of the North West Academies Trust.

Laura Spaven, from Oak View Academy, said: “I think an element of competition gives the children something to aim for, and helps them learn to be an effective member of a team.

“We ensure that all children can compete in some form of sport. All children are recognised for participating through certificates.”

Each school will take the lead in delivering a number of competitions throughout year, enabling children to make new connections and friendships.
