TWO Winsford community support workers are the recipients of a police commendation award for their on-going commitment to improving the Wharton housing estate.

The Chief Superintendents Commendation from Cheshire Police is rarely given to people outside of the police, but Weather Vale Housing Trust Housing Officer, Suzanne Gordon and PCSO, Stephen Bishop have been recognised for their continuing work.

They have been awarded for their work with The Wharton Housing Estate over the past five years, which is considered one of the most challenging areas in Cheshire for the police.

Inspector David Snasdell, from Northwich Police Local Policing Unit, said: “I have worked with Suzanne for many years and she has great drive and commitment to support the community.

“Suzanne embraces partnership working. She is very passionate about the area and a credit to the Trust.”

The housing estate is one of the top ten areas in the county for depravation.

Suzanne and Stephen’s community engagement, such as supporting the Neighbourhood team in developing intelligence, aims to target individuals and families who cause problems within the close knit area.

The pair have gathered evidence on individuals who have caused antisocial behaviour and crime, which has led to antisocial behaviour orders being authorised by the courts, housing evictions, drug supply convictions and a crack house closure.

Insp Snasdell, added: “Without support over the years the Police would not have delivered a safer a community, and detected many serious incidents and crimes.”

Their commitment has extended from the reduction of crime, as they have regularly put together diversionary activities for the youth of the estate, to divert them from criminal activity.

A number of events, such as, ‘Pizza & Smoothie’ nights, games events, outdoor activities and community clean ups take place throughout the year.

These events have been beneficial during the school holidays, as it is a demanding period for police resources.
