WINSFORD’S MP has urged more youngsters to take up science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Earlier this month, Antoinette Sandbach, MP for Eddisbury, met with UK scientists at an event held by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics in Parliament.

The Winsford MP discussed research from both chemistry and physics, where innovations and companies have developed from work that began in university science departments.

Ms Sandbach said: “It was great to see more evidence that physics and chemistry are contributing so much to our economy and see some of the innovative work that is being done.

“There is also a clear message that science is an excellent career choice for young people to consider.

“I want to continue to support these groups and show students in Eddisbury that taking up STEM subjects is really worthwhile.”

The event also highlighted the importance of long-term government funding to science and the benefits it has on the UK economy.

Professor Dominic Tildesley, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said: “We have the evidence to show that Britain is a world leader in science and that government investment in science boosts the UK economy."
