A PROSTATE cancer campaigner has expressed his ‘disappointment’ after no-one showed up to a testing session in Winsford.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men with more than 40,000 men diagnosed and around 12,000 men dying from it every year in the UK.

To help combat this growing issue, Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group teamed up with Medical Detection Dogs.

The dogs were present at the Winsford Conservative Club, Ways Green, on Saturday, July, 4, but not a single person turned up on the day.

Gary Steele M.B.E, chairman of Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group, said: “I found it so disappointing as well as disheartening for me.

“I put so much time and effort in having these dogs demonstrate their wonderful skills in helping us to sniff out prostate cancer.

“Using the Medical Detection Dogs is something unique and trialling these dogs is proving as high as 98 per cent, in some instances, at detecting prostate cancer.

“Should this type of testing be proved to be a success it would be a very simple way to diagnose if a man has a cancer, possibly without the need for a PSA blood test. Just imagine no needles.”

Mr Steele, along with other support groups and the Graham Fulford Trust, has been involved in testing men for prostate cancer for eight years.

To date they have collectively tested nearly 50,000 men across the UK, and Mr Steele hopes the detection dogs will prove to be an invaluable weapon in their fight against the deadly disease.

He added: “So far we are just touching the surface of what these dogs are capable of in the fight against this type of cancer.”

Mr Steele does plan to return to Winsford to hold further testing sessions, and will hold a Byley Village Hall, Northwich, on Saturday, July 18.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to be tested for early detection prostate cancer and a urine sample will be taken for the detection dogs.

Men aged 65 and over also have the opportunity to be tested for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
