A COMMUNITY project will see those frequenting the River Weaver in Winsford take a trip back in time to see what the area looked like a century ago.

A number of display boards that illustrate the salt history of the River Weaver valley between Winsford Town Bridge and Newbridge will soon go on display later this year.

The boards paint a vivid picture of this entire stretch of river alive with noise, bustling salt works, railway lines, blacksmiths, saw mills and no end of other industrial operations.

The project is being delivered by the Friends of Weaver Parkway, a group of volunteers who help the Countryside Rangers maintain and improve Weaver Parkway.

Project manager Kenneth Acton, a member of the Friends of Weaver Parkway, said: "Nowadays, the Weaver Valley parkway is an attractive wooded environment awash with colour and teaming with wildlife.

“But it wasn’t always like that.

“We hope the history boards will enhance people's enjoyment of the Parkway and encourage new visitors.”

The new history boards are part of the Saltscape Landscape Partnership, which is funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The partnership aims to restore and celebrate the unique features of the salt landscape along the Weaver Valley.

The Friends of Weaver Parkway have been assisted in the development of the boards by members of Winsford History Society.

The group has also received funding from Salt Union Ltd, AMCOL International, Cheshire West and Chester Council and Winsford Town Council.

Before they are installed, half size draft versions of the boards will be on display in Winsford library until March 27.

The Friends of Weaver Parkway are welcoming feedback from members of the public before the the history boards are put on full display later this year.

The group are also looking for volunteers to help continue their efforts.

Mr Acton added: "We need more people, both men and women, to help us and the Rangers with voluntary work of all types.”

If you are interested in volunteering speak to the Rangers at their office opposite Wharton Park pub, or ring them on 01606 593133.
