WINSFORD Town Council will resurrect an old local tradition this Easter by handing out Good Friday Balls in the town centre.

People of a certain age from Winsford remember the tradition from years past.

Originating in the the early years of the last century, workers used to take home balls used in salt production, paint them and give them to their children on Good Friday.

In later years, parents continued the tradition by giving their children a brightly coloured Good Friday Ball.

The tradition waned in recent years, but was brought back by the town council in 2013 after people consulted in Winsford Neighbourhood Plan said more should be done to celebrate the town’s rich salt heritage.

On Good Friday, April 18, town mayor Mike Kennedy will be at the ASDA foyer on the shopping centre between 2.30-4pm, handing out Good Friday balls to any youngster who shows him a receipt for something bought anywhere within the Winsford Shopping Centre – even if it’s for just 10p.
