THE ‘vision’ has faded but when the good times come CWAC will be ready to re-invigorate Northwich and will hit the ground running.

So say two of our local councillors. I cannot see this within the near future.

However one company has already noticed green shoots. Possibly for the cultural/bars section. Punch Taverns plc, owners of the closed Crown public house, adjacent to an area to be developed should the ‘vision’ re-appear, are re-developing the building as a late night venue. Opportune as two former establishments have recently closed.

The company solicitors, Ford & Warren, of no shown address, are applying on behalf of Punch Taverns for a variation of the premise’s licence, to CWAC, Vale Royal Licensing Department, Winsford.

New licensing times being applied for are– until 1am Sunday to Wednesday, Boxing Day and Good Friday, and until 2am Thursday to Saturday and Christmas Eve. To be added to these times, an additional 30 minutes as drinking-up time. The public notice was at the bottom corner of page 51 of October 21’s Guardian in small fonts.

Should permission be granted, apart from late night takeaways, it will be of little comfort to residents living within and around the town area who normally are in bed at these times. Oh for the days when the licensee had to personally appear before a court bench to apply for even a minor extension of his hours.

Meanwhile, CWAC will invest £250,000 (a miniscule amount by modern accounting) in tidying-up the town.

Eight weeks ago the pavements at the end of Highbank Road, Greenbank, were re-aligned and the ends dropped to road level. The job is still unfinished but three moveable bollards guarding a sunken grid, which this week has received attention, now stand opposite the telephone exchange guarding the kerb.

Posts stand that once showed the road name that long ago disappeared. Can we have a new one?

Four weeks ago a similar task was undertaken at the Chester Road, Castle, bus stop. The job remains unfinished. However 12 bollards stand to protect it together with a large blue arrow sign.

Have our councillors not noticed? They both live locally.
