THERE is a huge amount of confusion about the simple term, ‘the will of the people’ as used by those pursuing an ideological exit from the EU.
The people are not clairvoyant and can only vote on the information available to them at the time.
It is a travesty of our proud democracy to use this phrase as an excuse for pursuing an ideological path that is not of any service to most of those who supported Brexit.
The will of the people is only relevant when the people are well informed of the choice and implications of the decision in front of them.
It is also being used as an excuse for decrying any form of direct democracy and to undermine the very value it is being used to promote.
The use of this term by Brexiteers is scandalous and shows a callous disregard for the principles of representative democracy.
