The crossbar may have got in the way of Danny McKenna’s attempts to put Witton Albion ahead in their opening home game of the season against Mickleover Sports on Tuesday night but it was the versatile former Runcorn Linnets man who bagged the winner.
McKenna, 21, in his third season in a red and white striped shirt, rifled home in the 70th minute after Liam Goulding laid him on.

It proved enough to secure for Witton, who handed a debut to loan signing Kyle Hawley, a first win of the new campaign and a rise of eight places to sixth in the BetVictor Northern Premier League.
Good game despite appalling weather conditions at Witton this evening!

I took the weather forecast from BBC Weather to post on the Albion page, suggesting a mild sunny summer's evening! How wrong!!! Poured it down all night!
Three good points though! 👍🏼
A real gritty performance. Really impressed by the whole team on the ball.

We stood up to a Mickleover side who tried to physically impose themselves by fair means or fouls, and thus played themselves out of the game once Albion used the ball. Really impressed by Tom Edwards.
Great shift from the lads, well earned 3 points 👍🏻⚽️ onto Monday now @WittonAlbion ⚪️🔴 https://t.co/KvXOIdHoD5

Tom Owens has an impact knock, but it’s not a big concern.
James Foley (ankle) is still some way off, while Rob Hopley (knee) has a scan scheduled Thursday.
James Murray is away.
Brilliant win lads, time to crack one of these open! See you next Monday in green territory! @WittonAlbion#UTA pic.twitter.com/RwIEBFOrX0

Hawley had earlier combined with McKenna before the latter’s arcing 25-yard shot rattled the woodwork in what had been the best scoring chance of the first half in pouring rain at Wincham Park.

Before kick-off 284 spectators, players and officials wholeheartedly took part in a minute’s applause for Terry Murphy, the former Witton player and manager who died on Saturday, aged 79.
A similar minute of respect for Murphy was paid over at Townfield in Barnton, too, where 1874 Northwich were defeated 4-2 by Irlam in the North West Counties League Premier Division.
A minutes applause here for the legendary Terry Murphy.

They fell 3-0 adrift, with two of the goals coming from Jordan Southworth in a coach-killer three-minute period either side of half time.
1874 Northwich then hit back.
First Lee Jackson (58) and then Matthew Woolley (81) put the game back in the melting pot.
Dylan Meredith only settled the outcome in the 90th minute.
Awful weather. Awful game. @1874Northwich put it right Saturday

A magnificent display from our players this evening against a very good 1874 side.
Well done to both sets of players. 100% effort for 90mins in terrible weather.
GET IN !!!!!!
Hard luck 74 let’s bounce back with a win in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Not the ideal result tonight, but on a personal note, it’s nice to see this has been well received 💚 https://t.co/6pncns9jZV

Devastated, will see what the damage is and work hard to get back stronger. Gutted for the boys tonight, no doubt they will respond this weekend @1874Northwich 👊🏻⚽️

Meanwhile, Barnton suffered a third defeat in five North West Counties First Division South outings when they visited Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Samuel Adewusi put the hosts in front after 36 minutes but the points were only secured late on through Kayle Power (85) and Terry Mupariwa (91).
A lovely note in the programme from @wythenshaweafc about Terry Murphy, a lovely touch that #ThankYou pic.twitter.com/HIHoEoeCJx
