LONGRIDGE Town grabbed two late goals to complete a comeback victory against Winsford United, writes Eithan Boulter-Ashcroft.

After a first-half goal from Sam Marshall, Blues missed a handful of opportunities to double their lead which they were left to rue.

Two late goals from Scott Harries and Dean Ing gave the visitors the three points.

Longridge started sharply with Kian Makepeace and Harvey Hayhurst combining, but a last ditched block cleared the danger.

The visitors controlled the opening periods with Moses Yoak going close.

Blues managed to ride the early pressure before finding a foothold in the game.

Robbie Hatton found Sam Marshall with a neat pass in behind the defence for the hosts first opportunity but his shot was blocked.

From the resulting corner Winsford captain Perry Bircumshaw rose highest but he was unable to direct his header on target.

Having lacked a clinical edge in front of goal at the start of the season, Winsford broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal.

Dylan McMahon beat the defender before finding Marshall with his cut back who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give Lee Duckworth’s side the lead.

It could have got better for Winsford in the final minutes of the first half if it wasn’t for a brilliant fingertip save from James Aspinall in the Longridge goal, to deny a powerful header by Daniel Boden.

With seconds remaining of the opening 45 minutes the ball fell to Hatton on the edge of the box who struck a wonderful half volley which looked destined for the top corner but yet again a Longridge defender was in the right position at the right time to head the ball away.

Winsford continued the second half the way in which they finished the first, intricate play between McMahon and Boden allowed the full-back to advance but his cut back was intercepted.

Longridge did get themselves back into the game as Yoak tested Ryan Livesey with a fierce effort from distance.

As the game passed the hour mark the hosts had another opportunity to extend their lead as Hatton saw his headed effort go over the crossbar.

Lee Duckworth’s side were left to rue their missed opportunities as Longridge grabbed a late equalise through Harries, who found himself free at the back post to head past a helpless Livesey.

As Winsford pushed for the winning goal from a corner they were caught on the counterattack.

The ball was headed clear to Makepeace who sent Courtney Skerritt away down the line, he cut back inside before finding Ing at the back post who powered his header into the bottom corner to give Longridge a 2-1 victory.

Winsford will continue to look for their first win of the season against local rivals Northwich Victoria at the Barton Stadium on Monday, kick off 7.45pm.
