A Joe Duckworth double helped Winsford to a comfortable victory against Avro Football Club.

Having suffered back to back defeats against Prestwich Heys and Irlam, the Blues were given an added incentive with top goalscorer Joe Duckworth returning to the side.

It only took 13 minutes for Duckworth to get back on the scoresheet. The ball was played into the box and the Blues number nine calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

After falling behind Avro threatened all game from set pieces. On the 20 minute mark the ball was lifted into box with the knocked down close to reaching a teammate, but Matty Russell was on hand to clear the danger.

Winsford went close to doubling their lead minutes later with Matty Coughlan’s effort going close. The Blues fans didn’t have to wait long until the second goal of the game. With the game approaching the half hour mark Duckworth grabbed his second.

Following a corner Duckworth was brought down inside the box. He dusted himself down to dispatch the penalty.

With five minutes left of the first half, it looked certain that Avro would pull a goal back, but Ryan Hamer in the Winsford goal had other ideas. Sam Rathbones headed effort forced Hamer into a brilliant reflex save keeping the scores at 2-0 heading into half time.

On the hour mark Winsford scored their third and what a goal it was! Matty Boland received the ball 25 yards out from goal, before unleashing a thunderous effort into the far corner.

Trailing 3-0 with half an hour remaining the visitors never gave in. Liam Ellis flashed his effort across goal before Louis Potts saw his header go just wide.

Avro finally got a deserved goal with 15 minutes remaining. A mistake in defence from the Blues saw Kane Wallwork slot the ball past the goalkeeper. It was almost two goal in as many minutes for Wallwork, with his long ranged effort coming back off the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Avro with Winsford coming away with a comfortable 3-1 victory.

Winsford will look to continue their winning form as they welcome Northwich Victoria to the Barton Stadium on September 14th.
