WINSFORD United progressed to another knockout semi-final following a penalty shoot-out success against Charnock Richard.

Damian Skolorzynski held his nerve to convert a decisive spot-kick for Blues on Monday after they had played out a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes.

Goalkeeper Matthew Green played a part too, beating away Tyler Rufus’ penalty before the full-back finished the job.

Their team’s reward is a place in the Macron Cup’s last four.

Winsford had taken the lead on 62 minutes when teenager Declan Daniels steered a header out of Charnock custodian Adam Halton’s reach from Michael Koral’s cross.

The visitors drew level when leading goal-scorer Carl Grimshaw teed up Rufus, who fired an angled shot past Green.

Liam McNally might have won it for the away side, while Winsford’s Will Foster headed off-target substitute Scott Taylor’s corner.

Lee Duckworth’s side had been better before the break, and Foster prompted Halton to smother at the second attempt after he met Michael Taylor’s centre.

Koral appealed for a penalty midway through the half, although referee Paul Stonier wasn’t persuaded, while Danny McLaughlin’s effort flashed over after he had cut inside from the right flank.

Danny McLaughlin had the hosts’ best chance during a first-half in which Winsford had the upper hand, only to slip at the point of contact with Koral’s cross to leave Halton untroubled while making a routine save.
