WINSFORD Saxons have been accepted into the Chester and Wirral Football League, entering at the Championship level, writes Mike Critchley.

This will give the club local derby against Winsford Diamonds, who have also entered the league this season.

They have switched to this competition after the Crewe and District League was thrown into doubt following the withdrawal of Tarporley.

Saxons Manager Gary Jamieson explained: “We made the decision as the club and players have done so much to get where we are now for it to go to waste if Crewe and District league was to fold during a season.

“So we a had a decision to make and we’re excited to see how the season pans out in a new league.”

Meanwhile, Saxons finished their pre-season with a win against Christleton FC, 2-1 with both goals coming from the exciting youngster Callum Herbert.

In scoring the first goal he used his pace to beat the offside trap before coolly slotting it home between the keeper’s legs.

They were up against a young side Christleton side that despite its youth was technically very good opposition which posed Saxons a few threats.

However, a goal from Callum Herbert gave Saxons breathing space after finding himself unmarked at the back post to finish into an empty net after great work down the right by Dylan Williams.

Christleton scored late on but Saxons saw the game out and to end pre-season with a decent winning run out.
