WINSFORD United head to Avro on Saturday on the back of exiting the Cheshire Senior Cup.

Blues bowed out 4-2 in the second round at the hands of higher-league Hyde United on Monday.

Nathan Cotterell (28) responded to strikes by Jordan Fagbola (21) and Jack Dyche (25) to stay in the hunt.

After Tom Pratt (51) made it 3-1 Winsford fought back again through Sam Madeley (72).

Hyde’s progress was only confirmed through Ashley Young’s 90th-minute effort.

On Saturday Blues drew 2-2 at home to Congleton Town.

Winsford twice came from behind with Sam Marshall (43) and Madeley (77) bagging the goals.

Meanwhile, Winsford Saxons picked themselves up from a tough night at higher-league Nantwich Town with a 6-2 success against Sandbach Curshaws in the Crewe and District League.

Saxons, who lost 6-0 to the Dabbers in the Crewe and District FA Cup last Wednesday, took the lead after five minutes when striker Kane Ode powered through three players before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.

Greg Lumsden quickly made it 2-0 with a typically fine finish and Saxons suddenly found themselves three goals ahead within 15 minutes when Hayden Mills unleashed a left foot strike from 25 yards, into the top corner.

Greg Lumsden made it 4-0 before half time when he latched onto a through ball from Ode before rounding the keeper to finish.

Saxons continued to dominate play although Sandbach managed to match the scoring rate in the second half.

Ode hit a splendid free kick which hit both posts before Barry Jones followed in to score a tap in for 5-1.

Jay Meakin finished the game off in style, running onto a headed ball back from Ethan Stockall before volleying into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

That’s three wins on the bounce in the league in 2020 and they will be hoping to make it four when they visit Mary Dendy FC on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.

Nantwich scored four goals in the final 20 minutes to leave the harsh 6-0 scoreline against Saxons last week.

Manager Gary Lee Jamieson says his Winsford side did themselves justice in the defeat.

The Dabbers play four leagues and seven divisions higher than Saxons.

“We gave 100 percent all game, picked up a few injuries along the way. But Saxons gave a great account of themselves,” said the Saxons manager.

“Ultimately the fitness and more so the quality of Nantwich showed and they scored four goals in the last 20 minutes to give them a resounding, but in our eyes harsh 6-0 win.”

A decent crowd turned out to see the minnows versus giants affair.

“We started off relatively well,” said Jamieson.

“We soaked up some pressure early on and picked our moments to break on them.

“Greg Lumsden went close after 10 minutes, firing one just over the bar from the edge of the area.

“But the pressure paid off for Nantwich as we couldn’t get a foothold of the game and they scored a great goal after some combination play down the right wing.

“They struck again on the stroke of half time to make it 2-0, which was slightly harsh considering the effort we put in.

“Second half was more of the same, soaked up the pressure, picked our chances to attack.”

Saxons turn their focus back to the league campaign on Saturday when they visit Sandbach Curshaws, kick-off 2pm.

Sandbach are currently second on the ladder, with Saxons third but only a point behind with three games in hand.
