WINSFORD United’s Macron Cup campaign is over at the earliest possible stage.

A much-changed Blues outfit were undone by lower-ranked Prestwich Heys, with a 70th-minute Max White goal enough to seal their progress.

White’s goal came after a plethora of missed chances by Blues and they were made to rue their profligacy.

Dominating the ball early, Winsford should have led when Nathan Cotterell rounded the keeper but could not get enough power on his shot, allowing a Prestwich defender to clear off the line.

Obi Anorou then shot straight at the keeper when through on goal as Blues controlled the first half-hour before the hosts came back into it.

The hosts hit the bar and Winsford were forced to defend desperately from the ensuing goalmouth scramble to ensure they went into the break on level terms.

Lee Duckworth’s side continued to have a lot of the ball but still could not find a breakthrough.

Brian Matthews missed a golden opportunity – putting a free header wide from just a few yards out – and shortly afterwards, his side were punished.

With 20 minutes remaining, Rio Wilson-Heyes’ cross found White and he poked the winning strike beyond Michael Langley in the Winsford goal.
