STUDENTS are hoping to make a name for themselves on the national stage this weekend.

Cheshire's team for the English Schools' Track and Field Championships, which start at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham today, includes more than half-a-dozen medal hopefuls from schools and colleges in Northwich.

They have been selected as a reward for their performances at the county championships - and also the Mason Trophy - earlier this season.

"For decades we have seen aspiring senior champions of tomorrow take formative steps towards at these championships," said Chris Jones, chief executive officer at England Athletics.

"While it is only one step, the event also plays a part inspiring young athletes to continue participating in track and field."
