TWO former champions are among the contenders to lift the Roberts Bakery Cup at Davenham.

Glynn Cookson, of Wharton Cons, is an eight-time winner and he will hope his know-how makes the difference on Sunday afternoon in a section of the draw featuring inexperienced rivals.

He may need to produce his best against Joe Tomkinson, who showed his composure to win a close contest with Nick Hamman in sodden conditions at Comberbach on Monday to reach the Guardian Cup final.

Meanwhile first-timers Jason Taylor, who like Tomkinson is a member at Owley Wood, and Eric Webber (Castle) have been paired at the quarter-finals stage.

Both are recent converts to the sport, one from darts and the other from pool, but that won’t deter either from attempting to upset an established order.

Castle’s Rob Winnington is the other bowler in the field to have won the competition previously back in 2005.

The Cheshire captain faces an in-form opponent in Frodsham Red Lion’s Neal Ocego, who had an unblemished record in the Mid-Cheshire Bowling Association this season before a narrow 21-19 loss to Glyn Walton in a Premier Division fixture at Rudheath A on May 31.

Matty Hamman (Castle) or Simon Jones (Tarporley) await the victor of that head-to-head in the last four.

Play starts at 2pm.
