HOLLY Weedall reached an entry standard for this year's English Schools' Track and Field Championships on her way to claiming a county title last weekend.
The Weaverham High School student defied wretched conditions at Victoria Park in Warrington to take gold in the junior girls' 1,500m final in 4:42.2 - one of 20 wins registered by athletes representing Mid Cheshire.
An indication of how heavy and persistent rainfall affected participants in the Cheshire Schools' Track and Field Championships is the fact she had been nine seconds faster during a Trafford Grand Prix four days earlier.
Sir John Deane's College student Ewan Bradley (senior boys' 110m hurdles) and The Grange School's Evie Tipping (inter girls' hammer) matched Weedall's feat on their way to victory.
Hermione Mason, from Hartford Church of England High School, finished as a runner-up in a high-class junior girls' 75m hurdles final that saw each of the medallists set a time that is fast enough to take on the best of the rest in the country at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham next month.
She crossed the line in 11.4s, a personal best.
Gabriel Mikoleizik (St Nicholas RC High School) followed a victory over 100m in the Cheshire Minors' Championship two years ago by winning both his junior boys' heat and the final, while Sam Doe (County High School Leftwich) took the 300m title.
After finishing second in 2018, Alex Causton (The Grange) went one better to prevail in the long jump, while there were first prizes in the field too for St Nick's student Jacob Foster (high jump) and Weaverham trio Owen Jackson (triple jump), Ben Thorne (discus) and Isaac Milichip (hammer).
Charlie Bancroft (Weaverham) completed a hat-trick of wins at the county championships when he won the inter boys' shot, while Alex Doyle (Sir John Deane's College) completed a schools and club double for the current campaign in the senior boys' 1,500m.
Meanwhile Leftwich pair Anna Howman (shot) and Megan Henshall (javelin) both threw furthest in their respective inter girls' competitions.
Athletes from five schools in the district won a title, securing for themselves an invite to represent Cheshire at the Mason Trophy inter-counties match on Saturday.
Selectors must then decide who to select for the national championships by Tuesday, June 25.
