CARL Macauley has rated his players’ performance during a five-goal demolition of Buxton as one of the best during his time as Witton Albion’s manager.

The Northwich side were emphatic victors at Silverlands, where their hosts had lost only once in a Northern Premier League fixture so far this season.

“I can’t think of a better display and I’ve told the lads that,” said Macauley.

“They were outstanding, and I found myself just enjoying an opportunity to watch them play.

“It must have been a treat for our supporters too.”

Witton had to absorb pressure initially from opponents front-loaded with attackers and took the lead midway through the opening period when Will Jones steered in Matty Devine’s cross.

It was the striker’s first goal in the Premier Division since April and, visibly relieved to end the wait, all of his teammates ran to congratulate him.

Macauley said: “He bullied their two central defenders, and did everything we asked of him.

“He won flick-ons, held up play well and worked so hard for us.

“I was made up that he scored because he’s been struggling and his confidence has been really low. It was a big moment.”

James Foley converted a penalty to make it 2-0 and the midfielder put the contest out of the Bucks’ reach when he clipped in a neat third goal on the hour.

Danny McKenna curled in a fine fourth before Josh Meade deflected Foley’s shot past goalkeeper Theo Roberts in added time.

Albion continue to occupy a lowly position in the table, but have two games in hand on all the teams immediately above them.

Macauley said: “I’m delighted to put some points on the board and to play like that in a league game.

“That’s important; we haven’t been worried, but we were conscious that our best performances have been in the FA Cup and FA Trophy before this one.

“There were some really lovely passages of football, and I was happy that we kept our foot to the pedal until the final whistle.”

Asked by the Guardian if a different direction during training on Thursday, when his players tried hot yoga for the first time at new venue Hotpod Yoga in Northwich town centre, had a part to play, he laughed.

“I’m going to be asked that a lot aren’t I?” he replied.

“The lads loved it, I can tell you that much.”
