GEORGE Lawton hopes to have caught the eye of selectors for the British rowing team after an impressive showing during a winter assessment last weekend.

The former Northwich Rowing Club star, representing Reading University, was ninth overall after a 5km time trial in a men’s single scull at Boston.

After completing a 2km ergo test the on Saturday, he stopped the clock in 19:23.26 after taking to the water the next day.

Lawton, who took gold in a men’s double with Rory Harris at the European Universities Games over the summer, contested the World Junior Championship two years ago while a Northwich member.

Josh Burke, now at Molesey Boat Club, was 25th in the same time trial on Sunday.

Charles Cousins (The Griffen Boat Club) won in emphatic fashion by 30 seconds from world under 23s champion Matt Haywood (Nottingham) in a time of 18:26.48.

Another Northwich alumnus, George Crouchley, was third of the under 20s in the lightweight men’s field.

Beth Willford-Dutton, representing Oxford Brookes University, classified just outside the top 20 in the women’s event and third of the under 20s in action.

Meanwhile former Grange School students Tom Ford and Emily Ford were both exempt from the first assessment after representing Great Britain at last summer’s world championships.

A second trial, by invite only, is scheduled for next month.

Promising juniors have an opportunity to impress on Saturday during an early ID assessment at the same venue.

Patrick Brogan, Ellie Cushen, Gwilym Harris and Harrison Kendall-Smith will travel to Boston from Northwich.
