PAUL Carden says he will take some of the blame for his Warrington Town side's defeat to Matlock Town on Saturday.

The 1-0 loss at Cantilever Park put an end to Town's seven-match winning run in the Evo-Stik Premier Division and stopped their record of not conceding a league goal in over 15 hours.

Following their victory at Whitby Town on Tuesday night, Carden made the decision to give his squad the night off training on Thursday and he said that contributed to them not being properly prepared to face the Gladiators.

"To be honest, I will take a bit of the blame myself," he said.

"I gave the lads the night off training on Thursday for the right reasons, because we got home late from Whitby.

"With the group of players we’ve got, I think it’s important to train even if its minimal because they are used to it and it helps psychologically with their preparation. It’s something I’ve learned about the group now.

"We did it before the Consett game, and we never got the right performance. I will take the hit on it.

"There was probably only Tony McMillan who came away with a slightly above average performance. There was too big of a number who underperformed."

Craig King's first-half goal was enough to earn Matlock the three points as Yellows lost their first game since the season's opening day.

Carden believes his side should have had a golden chance to take the lead before they fell behind, but admits they did not do enough to get anything from the game.

"We started quite well and I thought we should have had a penalty for a foul on Tony Gray," he said.

"It was a blatant penalty, their manager said so himself.

"Over the 90 minutes, we weren’t good enough. I don’t think we deserved anything.

"They set up to be hard to break down and we didn’t get anywhere close to breaking them down."

Meanwhile, Yellows have been drawn to face Prescot Cables at home in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

The tie will take place on Saturday, October 27, at Cantilever Park, kick off 3pm.
