WINSFORD United have agreed terms on a new deal with captain Will Foster, a move that manager Lee Duckworth has described as an early statement of intent for next season.

The defender started more games than anybody for Blues last term, when his performances attracted the attention of higher-ranked rivals.

“He’ll continue to get better which is a frightening prospect,” said Duckworth.

“I already consider him to be one of the best centre-backs in the division.

“I’m made up he’s staying, and it’s something we’ve been working on over the past few weeks.

“It’s huge for the club because it proves our ambition matches his.”

Foster started all but three of Winsford’s 57 games in all competitions.

That followed an impressive breakthrough the previous season when he switched to Barton Stadium from Altrincham.

The 21-year-old said he feels appreciated by Blues.

“The management team made it clear they wanted me to stay very early on,” he added.

“And that was a big part of my decision.

“They’re ambitious and keen to progress – something we’ll be aiming to do next season.

“We enjoyed good moments last year, but struggled to be as consistent as we’d like.

“I think we’ll be stronger, and can push for a top-six finish.”

Duckworth has told the Guardian he has further signings to announce in the coming weeks.
