THE Grumpy Old Men meeting was inspired by the television programme and gave some ten or so members the chance to express various aspects of life that annoyed them.

Subjects ranged from bad and inconsiderate drivers and many drivers inability to park, baseball caps worn back to front, by tennis players in particular and the less obvious annoyance of speakers tapping a glass to get attention instead an official gavel. A couple of members maintained they were not grumpy and recounted amusing incidents from their lives. It proved to be a very entertaining meeting.

Judy Popley’s talk ‘A Prospect of Arley’ was based on an old photograph album compiled by Rowland Mills, an under gardener in the 1890s, at Arley Hall.

The talk compared Arley Hall in the 1890s to the 1990s. It was explained large parts of the hall had been demolished in the 1960s due to the prohibitive cost of maintenance.

Many interesting photographs of various members of staff and the fashions of the 1890s were shown as were several of the then extensive formal gardens.

The members observed one minute's silence in respect of the people killed in the terrorist attacks in Paris the previous Friday.

The indoor bowling season has still not started, but hopefully the various diaries will soon be arranged and the games will begin A trip to the JCB Factory in the spring will be organised. Members were asked to ‘sign up’ for a break in Torquay in April/May next year.

The Christmas lunch will be held at Willington Hall on December 10.
