CREWE gymnast Charlie Fellows is hoping she takes the first step on the road to Olympic glory with victory at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games in Gateshead.

The 13-year-old has already proved her form this season and is the current English Junior champion while she took silver in both the vault and the bars at the British Championships last month.

Fellows will be taking a step into the unknown in Gateshead, where she will make her UK School Games debut – although she is predicting some familiar opposition in the north east.

And Fellows is keeping her fingers crossed that this is the first of many multi-sport events on her agenda and hopes to one day aspire to USA’s Nastia Liukin, the current Olympic all-around champion.

She said: “I know most of the girls I will be competing against and know I have a chance of getting a good result.

“I’d love to go to the Olympics in the future and match my hero Nastia Lukin because she is one of the best in the world.”

However, Fellows is only too aware that her five-ringed ambition is still a long way off. But the Sandbach Gymnastics Club member is adamant she has the determination to succeed.

“I’m working really hard in the gym with my coach, Tracy Cooper, on improving my technique and learning new skills – especially in the floor which is my best event,” she added.

The Sainsbury’s UK School Games is managed by the Youth Sport Trust, a national charity that works with more than 450 school sport partnerships across the country to improve the PE and school sport experience for all young people. For more information visit www.youthsporttrust.org.
