A PILOT scheme to help people towards greener living and cheaper energy bills is still on offer to hundreds of residents in the town.

Groundwork Cheshire’s ‘Green Doctors’ have been handing out free home assessments to Weaver Vale and Muir Housing Group customers since it launched the scheme back in April this year.

But, with the winter months drawing in, Groundwork want to encourage more residents in the Greenfileds Park and Glebe Green areas to make the most of the free service.

James Kerr, one of Groundwork’s Green Doctors, said: “We know that there are many people that struggle over the winter months with increasing costs to provide a warm home.

“Our Green Doctors can fix draughty windows or doors and help residents save approximately £100 per year on energy bills.”

The scheme has already seen fully trained experts conduct energy audits in several houses on the two estates.

After examining how to make homes more energy efficient, the doctors carry out a combination of technical and non-techinical measures, from fitting draught excluders to installing radiator reflector panels, in a bid to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 500 tonnes.

Beverley Price, community engagement officer for Muir Housing, said: “Families on Glebe Green will benefit greatly from these measures, not just financially but by raising awareness of the challenges posed by climate change.

Weaver Vale Housing Trust and Muir Group have each contributed £10,000 to the scheme which was joint funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Judith Burbridge, neighbourhood manger for Weaver Vale Housing Trust, said: “During the summer months thinking about heating and lighting in your home is not always high on the agenda, but it pays to plan ahead for the darker, colder nights of autumn and winter.

“Although at present this is only a pilot scheme in Greenfields and Glebe Green we hope to be able to extend it to other areas in the future.”
