CREWE students were in a spin after teaming up with a disability wheelchair group to tackle rugby at South Cheshire College.

Students from sports and entry level courses were provided with a set of wheels to play rugby with members of the Wolverhampton Rhinos Disability Wheelchair Sports Group.

The sessions were co-ordinated by Alan Caron, community development manager for Wolverhampton Rhinos and took place in the college’s sports hall.

Students had a go at using offensive and defensive rugby wheelchairs to wheel themselves around and were securely fastened in with waist and ankle supports.

Chris Hollinshead, sports lecturer, said: “Students who participated in the day learnt a lot about what it’s like to play sport with a disability.

“They learnt how to attack and defend using the wheelchairs and they all found the session very informative.

“We are very grateful to Alan for taking time out to bring the group to college in what was a valuable learning curve for our students. The session also helped to raise awareness of mobility issues in sport.”

Students on entry level programmes, who aren’t wheelchair users but have a learning difficulty or disability, also took part in the rugby event.
