A LOCAL Grammar School Charitable Foundation is to receive a donation of £500, courtesy of a former pupil.

Councillor Brian Silvester, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, handed over a cheque for £500 to Bill Lighton, chairman of the Nantwich and Acton Grammar School Foundation.

The presentation is the latest in a series of donations made from the Lifelong Learning Fund, a charity set up by Clr Silvester during his mayoral year in 2008/2009 of the former Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.

All donations have been made to educational establishments, such as Manchester Metropolitan University, South Cheshire College and Reaseheath College.

After taking into account match funding, more than £40,000 was raised during Councillor Silvester’s Mayoral year.

Clr Silvester said “Having been a pupil of the former Grammar School, I’ve had first-hand experience of the work the Foundation does in helping young people to achieve their ambitions and I am delighted to be able to make this contribution to assist the students of today."

Mr Lighton expressed his pleasure at receiving the donation.

The Nantwich and Acton Grammar School Foundation was established by the Charity Commission in the closing years of the last century and relies on bequests to carry out its work.

While much of its funding is made available to Malbank School, the foundation has an obligation to assist in the education of individuals under the age of 25 living within the catchment area of the former grammar school.
