FAMILIES are being asked to come up with schemes which will encourage better use of the green spaces in Crewe's West End.

A consultation event will take place as part of a half-term Family Fun Day at the Frank Webb Avenue play area and Frank Bott Avenue playing field on October 30 when residents will be invited to give their views on how the green spaces can be improved.

The day combines the efforts of Greenscape - an environmental action project in the Coppenhall and St Barnabas regeneration wards - and the Crewe Local Area Partnership, which brings together people who have an interest and responsiblity for delivering improvements in the town.

Greenscape aims to enhance the physical landscaping of open areas within both neighbourhoods - creating new opportunities for leisure, recreation, personal development and training. The strategy taps into local talent and skills such as painters, sculptors, photographers and videographers.

Schools, community groups, neighbourhood projects and conservation organisations are also being invited to get involved.

As well as delivering the Greenscape message, the day will be used to engage with local residents and encourage their involvement in the design-making process so their ideas will be embedded within the local landscape.

On top of that it will also be a lot of fun with a host of activities planned.

On Frank Bott families can take the opportunity to have their bikes security marked free of charge and meet local firefighters and police.

Over on Frank Webb there will be a climbing wall and non-alcoholic bar.

On both sites there will be a treasure hunt as well as arts and crafts, recycling workshops, games and bulb planting by students from Reaseheath.

Residents can also enjoy a warm and rosy glow from the hot soup, hot chocolate and mallows that will be served - all free of charge.

Councillor Andrew Knowles said: "Events such as this are not only a great way of involving local people in decision-making but to promote community spirit, giving families a chance to meet on their home-turf and develop a bond.

"It also raises awareness of what the council is doing to improve green spaces across Cheshire East and get local people involved in the improvement process. "Crewe is blessed with many green spaces and ideally we would like more people to use them."

The Family Fun Day will be taking place on both sites from 11am to 2pm.
