WINSFORD United continue to be punished for their defensive lapses, this time letting Formby pinch their first points of the season.

Blues have now conceded 17 goals in their first five matches.

“We have to cut out the silly errors,” said manager Mike Alcock.

“At this level the lads are learning very quickly that mistakes will be punished.”

There was an early warning at the weekend when David Thompson cut in from the right and smashed a violent shot against the woodwork.

At the other end Winsford’s front runners were starved of the service that had allowed them to fire 13 goals in the opening fortnight of the campaign.

Gary Bryning went close at the start of the second half before keeper Lee Grannell escaped a red card on the hour after handling outside the penalty area.

Liam Page scored from the resulting free kick.

Formby doubled their tally six minutes later, Stephen Rose applying the finishing touch after Winsford failed to clear a set piece.

Substitute Jack McKay gave the home supporters some hope a minute later when winger Josh Hancock’s centre eluded everyone except the 18-year-old, and he smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

But hopes of a comeback were shattered on 76 minutes when a long centre caused confusion enough to spring Blues’ feeble offside trap, giving Neil Roberts time and space to score with ease from close range.
