WINSFORD have waited almost four months to savour success.

They came from behind to end a run of 14 matches without a win of any description – a wait stretching to 115 days.

Goals from home town favourites Lee Duckworth and Les Miranda sealed the points.

The script seemed a familiar one inside the first minute, when sloppy marking allowed Andy Sensale too much time to tee up Eddie O’Neill for the opener.

Blues’ response was instant, Miranda firing over from distance.

On-loan wide man Omar Mahmoud was the next to go close, his shot heading for the top corner until a defender diverted the ball to safety.

Another temporary recruit, Nathan Southern, combined with Miranda to send the veteran clear but his attempted lob was easily saved by Chris Thompson The home team were dangerous too, only a spectacular header off the line by John Couch preventing them doubling the lead.

Blues levelled seconds before the break.

Lee Duckworth’s free kick from the left found Southern in space, and his pinpoint cross was nodded home by Miranda.

They turned the tables further after the interval.

Mahmoud’s cross was handled by John Blackley following a scramble and, with regular spot kick expert Darren Connell on the bench, Duckworth stepped it to send Thompson the wrong way.

The hosts, rapidly losing their discipline out of frustration, were only able to make speculative shots at goal from distance.

A spate of yellow cards eventually lead to Blackley’s dismissal. Winsford had more energy as the home side failed to make any inroads towards an equaliser and former Middlewich Town shot-stopper Lee Granell, making his debut, was rarely troubled.

Blues might have added to their score when Mark Calland made a spectacular run into the box, but his shot was deflected wide.

From the resulting corner the same player’s header was inches over the bar.

Further efforts by Miranda and Connell, on as sub, went close but in the end they played the time out to pinch three precious points.
