WARRINGTON Wolves have a fresh injury concern this week – but there is better news for two of their sidelined players.

Head coach Sam Burgess has officially ruled Connor Wrench out of contention for Saturday’s trip to Salford Red Devils, and it is not currently known how long the young centre will be missing.

However, forwards Zane Musgrove and Ben Currie are nearing returns and there is a chance both could be available for the Round Eight trip to the Salford Community Stadium.

Musgrove has not featured since limping out of the Round Six loss to Catalans Dragons with an ankle injury having also failed a head injury assessment during the same incident, while a pectoral issue has ruled Currie out of the past two games.

Burgess insisted there was still some doubt about their availability for this weekend but at the latest, he expects the pair to be available for Hull FC’s visit to The Halliwell Jones Stadium next week.

“Connor won’t play this week,” he told his pre-match press conference today after the academy graduate was injured during the first half of Saturday’s victory over Leigh Leopards.

“We’re not sure how long he’ll be out just yet – we’ve got a bit to go through with that.

“Zane and Ben are both doing okay – we’re still not sure about this weekend but they’re getting closer.

“For those two, if it’s not this week it will be next. They’re not far off at all.”

Club captain Stefan Ratchford would appear to be favourite to step into Wrench’s shoes in the centres against Paul Rowley’s men, with Rodrick Tai also in contention.

The Papua New Guinea international has featured in the reserves’ past two games and scored two tries in their 66-16 win over Leigh at the weekend.

As such, Burgess was asked where Tai currently sat in his thoughts.

“I’m happy with Rod – he had a long knee injury and then he was behind Connor for a bit,” he said.

“For him, it’s just about finding his form and fitness again but we’re really happy with him here.”

On the reserves’ display which featured try-scoring outings for the likes of Max Wood, Matty Russell and Tom Whitehead, he added: “I liked the professionalism those guys showed.

“We’re getting back to some health so I’ve got some hard decisions to make, but they all did a pretty good job.

“It’s all about performance in our team so if they’re doing a good job and I think they can help the team, they’ll get a run.”

Burgess also confirmed he can now call upon his latest signing, with prop Daniel Okoro having recovered from the jaw injury he arrived with upon signing from Bradford Bulls earlier this month.

However, the wait for former South Sydney and St Helens youngster Wesley Bruines to come into contention for his debut will be a longer one – he is still several weeks away from a return having torn his hamstring during pre-season.

“Dan’s available for this week but Wes has got a number of weeks left yet,” the Wire boss said.

“He’s still four to six weeks away but he’s starting to get more around the training group, which is a good reward for him as he’s been in rehab for a long time.

“We’re trying to do the right thing by him and get him in the strongest possible position to return, so we’re not going to rush him.

“He was finding his feet in our pre-season when he got the injury, but it’s part of the game he just has to deal with.”
