ONE casualty was taken to hospital after a fire engulfed the first floor and roof space of a house this morning, Monday.

Emergency services rushed to a property on Sandringham Drive, in Sutton, shortly before 10am today.

Six fire engines were in attendance at the height of the blaze at the two-storey house.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the house to fight the fire using hose reel jets.

The blaze also spread to a neighbouring property, from which smoke could be seen issuing from the roof.

One person was put in the care of paramedics to be taken to hospital for treatment.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "MFRS are in attendance at an incident on Sandringham Drive, St Helens.

"Crews were alerted at 9.51am and on scene at 9.56am, with an initial two fire engines attending.

"At the height of the incident six fire engines were in attendance and one aerial appliance.

"Crews arrived to find a two storey semi-detached property involved in fire on the first floor and within the roof space. Four firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the house to fight the fire using two hose reels."

He added: "North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance and one casualty was brought into the care of Paramedics for onward transport to hospital.

"A total of six firefighters in breathing apparatus were committed to this incident using three hose reel jets to fight the fire in both the property where the fire originated and also a neighbouring property which was showing signs of smoke issuing from the roof."

After the main fire had been extinguished, the incident was scaled down by the fire and rescue service.

In an update at 4.30pm, the MFRS spokesman added: "An external handover has been completed.

"One fire engine remains in attendance at the property, with crews monitoring temperatures and removing timber and the fascia to the rear and side of the property, as well as roof tiles, to check for any hot spots."
